Shake or Fake?

As shake lovers, Maggie and I like to stop and taste new shakes when we can. Recently, we have been disappointed by several shakes from different venues and would like to expose them. Along with that we will mention shakes that we actually liked. Therefore when you go to get a shake you will not be had by these hit-and-miss/horrible/imcompetently employed joints. You will know where to get a good, decent, honest, hard-working, delicious shake.
Please feel free to leave us comments of where to find your favorite/least favorite shakes so we will know where to visit and where to avoid.

Sonic, Brigham City: Awful, just awful. We ordered Butterfinger shakes and what we got were vanilla shakes (with giant holes halfway down where the ice cream didn't quite make it) and maybe a tablespoon of crushed Butterfinger. There was probably 1/2 cup of whipped cream on the top- not worth it. When we ask for a Butterfinger shake, we want Butterfinger in it and not at the top to create an optical illusion. Do not order a candy bar shake at the Brigham City Sonic- or maybe any Sonic for that matter.

Dairy Queen, Holladay: Not bad, but more candy than ice cream. The Heath/cookie dough Blizzard was ordered and while they did not skimp on candy bar as many shake places do, there were so many chunks it was difficult to even find the ice cream. If we wanted a giant cup of candy bar, we would've bought that instead.

Arctic Circle, around the valley: Hit-and-miss. It also depends on what you order. We ordered a banana/Oreo shake (shout-out to Kim) and that did not disappoint. However, when it came to candy bar, they came up short. Unless you order chocolate ice cream as the base, you are going to get vanilla with a few candy bar pieces mixed in. Be careful with the caramel shakes- the shake gets quite diluted towards the bottom. It also makes a difference with who is working at the AC when you order. Some are generous with the flavors, some are chintzy.

Iceberg: hasn't disappointed yet. Iceberg does not skimp on the ice cream or the flavors. We ordered a "mini" Almond Joy shake and it was well-balanced with Almond Joy and ice cream from bottom to top. Same with the Rocky Road. The only drawbacks are the size and the price- both high. Unless you like half a gallon shoved into a giant cup, then you will be in heaven.
What are your suggestions?

  2. Holly, I also think that Sonic's ice cream is nasty. I am a big fan of Arctic Circle's Raspberry cheesecake and Reeses shakes. They both are extremely yummy, and they usually send coupons every Tuesday which is a bonus.

  3. I'm more of a shake-through-a-straw sort of person, Holly. The items you've listed look like they'd have to get to my mouth by spoon. My favorites are Leatherby's mocha chip something or other and their malt chocolate chip.

If I'm looking for something I can use a spoon with, Nielsen's anything will suit me fine.

  4. Thanks for the shout out Holly but I cant believe and am almost insulted that you left out our favorite place Rileys. Yes we havent been there in awhile but thats not their fault. Remember our Wednesday peanut butter Reeses shakes? Heavenly. What a great post Holly! Its certainly a subject I'm an expert on.
